Crew roles: Circumnavigation with the CEPA – Leg South Africa Richards Bay- Cape Town 13.11.- ca. 5.12.23 With this circumnavigation I am fulfilling a lifelong dream. I bought the ELBA 45 catamaran for this purpose, delivery took place in April 2022. We have further equipped the boat for the planned circumnavigation. In spring and summer 2022, we sailed the CEPA extensively in Brittany, Spain and Portugal and then via Morocco to the Canary Islands. In November 2022 I sailed the ARC across the Atlantic, which was now my 4th Atlantic crossing. After a family sailing trip over Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean, I started sailing around the world with the World ARC 2023-24 in January 23. I have now been living on my CEPA since April 2022 with a short break and feel very comfortable. Sailing is not only a sport and a challenge for me, but also a special way of life. I want to share this attitude to life with my crew. I like to sail fast, trim the sails well, but I have no dogged racing ambition. For me, the safety of the crew and the avoidance of injuries on board are paramount. After that comes safe, material-friendly sailing. Spare parts are hard to come by and expensive. Apart from that, the fun of sailing and enjoying life are in the foreground. On board we like to eat well and healthy, but neither purely vegetarian nor purely vegan. I make a point of eating breakfast, lunch and dinner together on board. We always buy very good food, vegetables and fruit, as far as available. We like to have a good wine or beer on board with dinner but not during the night watch. When we are ashore we like to go out for a good meal. I would like to see a similar attitude from my crew in this respect. There is no smoking on board. Briefly about myself Thomas Flöss: I am married and studied business administration. With my wife Britta, who also studied business administration, we have 2 children, Ann-Kathrin 25, and Constantin 22 years old, both still studying in St. Gallen/Barcelona and Madrid. We live in Esslingen near Stuttgart in the southwest of Germany and run 3 Intersport sports shops in the region, which are now run by one managing director. That gives me freedom. I've been sailing since I was a teenager, e.g. in regattas on the 505. Then I got into big-ship sailing through my parents and have many nautical miles in my wake as a skipper, before the ARC already 3 Atlantic crossings, 2 times east-west, once west-east to Horta Azores. My northernmost point was 81 North in Svalbard. On Lake Constance, my second home, I have a Dehler 34. On board I do almost everything, navigation, cooking, repairs of all kinds, I am seaworthy and don't get seasick. My hobbies are sailing, kiting and playing a bit of golf, mountain biking and I am a passionate skier in winter. I love to travel and am interested in foreign countries and cultures. German is my mother tongue, I also speak English and French. Schedule/Costs My wife Britta accompanies me on various legs. The catamaran has 3 cabins, one cabin is currently free for a single or a couple/friend sailors. Each cabin has its own bathroom with shower and toilet. We have a washing machine on board. For the period 13.11.23- approx. 5.12.23 Richards Bay/SA to Cape Town one cabin is free. As sailors you know that schedules depend on wind and weather conditions. It is important to have a certain flexibility in terms of time, even when booking flights. So far my circumnavigation has been on schedule, I hope it stays that way. Costs: - Travel and accommodation ashore and meals ashore at own expense. - On board: Contribution to the board cash (food, drinks, fuel) It would be nice if you could send me a short description/resume of yourselves. Why do you want to sail blue water. Who are you, what does your family do, what do you do for a living? What is your citizenship/passport (at least valid until December 2024)? - What sports do you do besides sailing, what other passions do you have? - With what qualities, skills can you enrich the life on board, cooking, technical and electrical knowledge, playing a musical instrument etc.? - What languages do you speak? - Are there any health restrictions, allergies or chronic complaints? - Do you need to take regular medication, if so which? - Are you seaworthy and don't get seasick?
