I am seeking to expand my Merchant Mariner Credential. I have long distance voyaging experience on tall ships as well as on my own Tartan 42 that I have sailed over 3000 nautical miles. As a semester-at-sea faculty leader, my knowledge of seamanship, both traditional and modern, is extensive. I have worked as Lead Educator for Proctor Academy’s semester-at-sea program leading the curriculum for high school students on a nine week voyage at sea. I have sailed as faculty on three such programs as well as a student when I was in college. I have also sailed as one of the foredeck crew aboard a J-120 in the 2016 Mackinac Race (both Huron and Michigan) and the J-120 national championships. In 2020, one of my best friends and I bought a Tartan 42 in Midland, Ontario and sailed her out the St. Lawrence Seaway to Portland, Maine. We met on our college semester at sea program and have sailed together as faculty on semester-at-sea programs. We work exceptionally well as a team and are potentially available to sail together, along with my girlfriend, if you are looking for a strong cohort of 1-3 sailors. I am currently in the process of founding a school that incorporates many of the elements that make high school semester-at-sea programs so impactful. As a teacher on these programs, it is essential that I not only know how to do a task but that I can teach it to others. As such, I have a depth of experience in both traditional sailing methods and modern sailing technology. I am very calm under pressure and try to live the philosophy of "lead by example." I have been caught in several serious storms: one during the Mackinac Race on Lake Michigan that sank another boat, a storm outside Havanna that required our 137' schooner to lay up in Key West for a week to repair her gammon iron, and another in the Gulf of Mexico that compromised our stuffing box and required me to quickly improvise an additional pump. I have been called upon by multiple captains to perform risky but necessary maneuvers in dicey situations because they knew they could rely on my acumen under duress. In one memorable storm, I had to climb into the rigging and then repel down the mainmast to make a repair to the fractured masthoops that had left the entire luff edge of the sail detached from the mast. I am currently waiting to test for my 100 GRT Near Coastal OUPV with sailing endorsement, 100 GRT Great Lakes Master with sailing endorsement, and 200 GRT Near Coastal Mate with sailing endorsement. I expect this to be completed in May 2022. |
