Began sailing Hobie catamarans as a teenager in Atlantic off Myrtle Beach, SC, buying my first boat (Hobie 14) at 15 and upgrading to a Hobie 16 after graduating high school. Taught sailing at a summer camp in Morehead City, NC, for three summers during college. Raced Hobie, Nacra, and Prindle catamarans over fourteen years beginning in college. Taught a semester-long sailing class on a classic 42-foot yawl during law school (1986) at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Owned and raced a J-22 for five years after law school. Crewed racing keelboats regularly on gulf coast (New Orleans, Gulfport, Mobile, Pensacola, Ft. Walton/Destin) during and since law school, including J-24s, Merit 25, S2-7.9, J-30, Evelyn 32, Soverel 33, Tartan 10, Pearson 10 meter, J-35, Tartan 3500, Ericson 37, J-41, and Beneteau 42. Also Corsair 28 trimaran. Most crewing experience involved working foredeck, but included all roles. Cruising and overnight experience includes navigation class and bareboat charter with Moorings in BVI on 46 foot sailboat in 1982; overnight race and return down Chesapeake Bay out of Annapolis, MD, on an Ericson 37, during summer of 1985, during which I stood solo night watches on the helm; cruise in Gulf of Mexico on O'Day 32 that included two nights offshore with solo watches on helm in 1986; and two overnight races in the Gulf of Mexico from Gulfport/Mobile to Pensacola on a Soverel 33 in late 1980s. Regularly crewed and helmed Catalina 315 and Dufour 430 during past three years learning to use spinnaker snuffer system, Raymarine electronic navigation system with chart plotter, and docking under power. Self-taught in celestial navigation during past year. Completed U.S. Sailing Safety at Sea seminar in March 2024. | |
