I am a 25 year old Irish man. I love the ocean and have spent my life in and around the water. I am a passionate and experienced surfer, a strong sea swimmer, a qualified Beach Lifeguard (with 3 years experience), a surf instructor and a tenacious and occasionally successful angler! I have always loved the idea of sailing and have fed my imagination with books such as Joshua Slocum's 'Sailing Alone Around the World', Theo Dorgan's 'Sailing Home' and Christian Beamish's 'Voyage of the Cormorant'. I love travelling but also value living a sustainable life. Therefore, I have made it my goal to sail for all my future overseas trips, starting with a transatlantic voyage this winter. In terms of sailing experience I have recently completed my first multi-day passage, roughly 240 NM from Cartagena to Gibraltar over 3 days and 2 nights on a 47 foot yacht with a skipper and one other crew. I helped raising, lowering, changing, trimming sails, I took part in watches, including night watches, I hand steered without autopilot during the day and at night and of course I washed dishes! I also gained some practical sailing experience this summer as crew on a j24 yacht and a 37ft yacht during club races with Mullaghmore Sailing Club and Waterford harbour sailing club and I have also been sailing a Lazer Pico by myself in moderate winds in a sheltered bay. Furthermore, I have completed an online NauticEd.org qualified crew member course, as well as a basic sail trim course and a navigation rules course. I am a very keen and determined student and want to learn all I can about sailing. However, I am also a fit, hard-working individual and am happy to follow instruction and help with anything I can. I am used to simple and basic living, having spent lots of time camping and surviving on sandwiches and beans, both in Ireland and abroad when chasing waves. Similarly, I am well used to the Atlantic's good and bad moods having surfed year-round all over Ireland for most of life and having worked as a Surf and Watersports Instructor at various times of the year (including in March and April). I am a kind, friendly, calm, open, hard-working individual and I love meeting new people and having a bit of craic (Irish word for fun). I am a qualified Primary School Teacher and love working with children. Through this work, and my work as a Surf Instructor and Beach Lifeguard, I have further developed my excellent people skilIs, and I am very good at communicating effectively, managing difficult situations, staying calm under pressure and working as part of a team. I love music and can play a little guitar and tin whistle. I am also a good cook. Lastly, I speak fluent English and Irish (Gaelic), and have a very good level of conversational Spanish. I would of course be happy to share and help out in all aspects of life onboard, including sharing in associated costs. I am available to meet anywhere in the Canary Islands from Sunday the 6th of November. Thank you and please don't hesitate to contact me if you want any further information.
