I am an almost-retired ex-medic and university academic, with over 20 years of experience of sailing my Southerly 135, ‘Kind of Blue’, in northern European waters. She is a 13.5 metre lifting keel, solid sailing boat, in good condition, having undergone a significant recent refit. For those that know Southerly’s she is a deck saloon model, with a linear galley joining the saloon to the aft cabin. I thought that she was the last one built with a single rudder (in 2002) until I met another Southerly 135 last year in Portugal who actually was! I’m now looking to expand sailing horizons. My partner is unfortunately easily seasick, and my other crewing friends don’t have time for longer ocean passages, so I was looking for new crew for these adventures. I sailed with ARC Portugal in June 2023 with a crew all of whom I met through Ocean Crew Link and all of whom have become good friends. Kind of Blue is now in Lagos, Portugal with plans to sail to the Canary Islands in June of this year, then to Madeira in September and back to Portugal. I will probably do the ARC or ARC+ in 2025 in Kind of Blue. I am also interested in crewing for other skippers on Ocean passages and perhaps on ARC or ARC + in 2024. Although I do not have a lot of ocean sailing experience, I have sailed in Europe, many hours of which was single-handed. I’m fairly familiar with most boat systems, so can often turn my hand to troubleshooting and maintenance. I’m happy with navigation, and with taking single-handed watches.
