Between 2003 and 2006, my wife and I sailed our Passport 456 sloop from Annapolis to Antigua, back to Annapolis, and then down the chain again as far south as Grenada and back. I figure we have maybe 20,000 miles under the keel. We've been out of sight of land for days at a time and ridden 12-foot swells. I don't get seasick above deck. Standing watch is not a problem although large freighters scare the hell out of me at night - particularly when they don't respond to radio calls. I can read charts and plan a course. I snore but I don't smoke, don't do drugs, nor drink to excess. That's the good news. The cautionary news is that I'm actually 74 (the OceanCrew form didn't go back to 1947 for dob) and haven't been sailing for more than ten years. Worse - my cooking is pathetic but I'm good at doing dishes and polishing stainless. Although officially retired since 2002, I've worked on a contract basis as an architect from time to time - mostly to keep busy and stay engaged. When we moved to Jacksonville, my wife insisted that I either get a job or a serious hobby. So I'm currently employed part-time at a kayak rental facility - schlepping 60+ pound kayaks right alongside high school co-workers for $10 per hour. Not making me rich but it keeps me out of trouble and outside year-round. I like it. On a lesser note, in my early years, I sailed a Beneteau 28 for three summers on an inland lake. I've helped friends with a couple of coastal deliveries. I have a Skipper's Certification from The Moorings and have rented from them a couple of times. | |
