[ closed ] Sailing Sorcery across the Atlantic and in the Caribbean Spain to Bonaire ref 13234

Cornelis Koster wants 4 crew for Sorcery, C&C61, m.

From Las Palmas, Spain to Kralendijk, Bonaire.

January 2022 to February 2022.

About our sailing vessel Sorcery. She was designed to race in the SORC (Southern Ocean Racing Conference), hence her name Sorcery. Her design proved to be radically different compared to the boats at the time, i.e. 100% glass fiber, fin keel. At the time glass fiber was not used extensively for vessels like nowadays, as a result Sorcery has been designed far stronger than actually required. As her previous owner mentioned, the crew will break before the boat. Sorcery was launched in 1970 and for a number of years was the sailing vessel to be beaten. She is a pedigree racer however over the years she has had several modifications to make her more suitable for cruising. Some of these changes are installation of watermaker, solar, bow/stern thrusters, foldable double beds in the saloon, etc. She is a fast sleek boat as such her inside is not as spacious as modern boats, still plenty of room thoug. There is one room in the bow with a double bed, other sleeping locations are two double beds and three bunks in the saloon and another two in the stern. Unless you are a couple the chance you will get the room upfront is low. For more information on Sorcery please see the following Wikipedia link “https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%26C_61“. Sailing Sorcery will be an adventure of a life time, as crew you are expected to participate in all the routines/chores required whilst on the vessel. We clean the toilets. Those relatively new to sailing will gain a respectable amount of ocean sailing experience. With the distance covered being more than 1,000 nm you will be able to join the OCC (Ocean Cruising Club). For the more experienced sailors, Sorcery offers you a chance to experience a true classic sailing vessel. She doesn’t go 35kts like Volvo Ocean racers however as a respectable record she has done 43 Nm in a 3 hour shift, this with a decent wind and a “pet” wave she surfed on for 2.5 hours. About us. We bought Sorcery about 2.5 years ago, after I retired (at 60) from a career which brought me all over the world with my family. Micha my second son is with me on board. I did appr 4,000 Nm, he did around 7,000 Nm and has been across the Atlantic in Dec 2019 (on another boat). We are easy going guys, pretty handy, love food, photography, chess, diving, fishing, kite boarding to mention a few hobbies. We bought Sorcery with the aim to sail her around the world, we started in Turkey where we were stuck due to Corona. Only beginning of this year we could “escape”. Since then, we have seen most of the good and bad the Med has to offer, i.e. a night sail with 50 kts wind gusts and 7 meter waves to mention a bad one. However, boat and crew handled it very well, so it turned out to be a good experience. We are super exited to make the crossing, do the Caribbean island hopping and hope that we’ll see true trade winds and have a fantastic trip to remember. Itinerary. The masterplan is as follows: - Until 7 January we will be in the Puerto de la Cruz (Las Palmas) marina. - 8th of January - Gran Canaria to Cape Verde, should be a 4 to 5 day trip however this stretch is known for its windless periods hence it could take longer. - 16th of January - The Crossing: Cape Verde to Antigua. With a distance of a little over 2100Nm, if the wind is reasonable, we’ll do this in around 12-14 days, hence arrival around 29th of January. - 4th of February - Day sail from Antigua to Guadeloupe and spend a few days in different anchorages. - 8th of February – Guadeloupe to Dominica. - 12th of February – Dominica to Martinique - 16st of February – Martinique to St. Lucia - 20th of February - St. Lucia to Grenada - 27th of February - Grenada to Bonaire, distance around 400 nm, again depending on the wind this will take around 2-3 days. Planned arrival beginning of February. Bonaire will be our base from which we plan to explore the Caribbean extensively. Note: Please take into account that all dates may vary by a few days, so a little flexibility might be needed. When crew needs to catch certain flights we will take this into account by adjusting the itinerary, if possible. What to bring. - A soft bag. - Anti-slip non marking boat shoes. - Thin rain gear. - Head torch. - Swim gear. - Credit card and some cash. - Covid vaccination details Note: That because of entry requirements into most of the Caribbean islands, all crew members need to be fully vaccinated, we can’t make any exceptions. Contributions. Sorcery is a 61-foot vessel, build from top class materials. As with any vessel, when she is used, she needs maintenance. Most we do ourselves however materials still have to be bought and at times experts will have to be brought in. Added there are marina charges, island registration charges for crew, fuel, food, drinks etc. We do need support from our crew members to assist us in keeping Sorcery in good shape and to partially cover her running costs. This is the first time we will have guests on board, who are not family, and it took us a long time to determine what would be a reasonable daily contribution. We arrived at Eur 125/day. This will be for the days as indicated in the itinerary. Example, if the crossing would take 16 days instead of 12 days due to the absence of wind then the daily contribution applied will be for 12 days. Days we don’t sail but anchor out (ref: island hopping in the Caribbean) the daily contribution will be Eur 50/day. Any day the sails go up the Eur 125/day applies. In case you wish to spend some days away from the boat there will be no daily charge. Daily contribution will cover everything whilst you are on Sorcery, food, drinks, fuel, marina, island check in fees for individuals etc. Visa costs (if applicable) and flights (incl. potential flight changes) will have to be funded by yourself. Note: When in Antigua first evening, food and drinks onshore, will be on us 😊.
