[ Cancelled ] Prince William Sound expedition United States to United States ref 14530
Todd Thompson wants 1 crew for Elcano, Shannon custom cutter, m.
From Bellingham, Washington USA, United States to Bellingham, Washington USA, United States.
June 2024 to August 2024.
PWS expedition description My sailing goal for the Summer 2024 season is to sail from Bellingham, Washington to Prince William Sound, Alaska and back. Prince William Sound is 2500 nautical miles round trip from Bellingham. Several 3 to 5 day offshore passages along the Gulf of Alaska coast are required to get there and back before Alaskan Fall weather sets in. The time commitment required of crew for this trip is about June 1st to mid- August. We will spend 2 or 3 weeks cruising Alaska’s Prince William Sound, a remote and stunning place where glaciers reach the sea, that is well worth the effort to reach it. Its scale dwarfs Puget Sound, offering many lovely anchorages that are little visited. In my experience the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska are among the best cruising grounds in the world, so this is a trip of a lifetime. There are some lovely rest stop anchorages on the way that I have visited on previous trips--Dall Island, Baranof Island and the Sitka area for example. The exact route and stops will be determined as usual by conditions. A team of three is what I have in mind as optimum for this kind of sailing to make sure everyone gets adequate rest for watch keeping, boat chores and enjoying the adventure. Elcano is maintained in excellent condition, has all appropriate systems, backups and safety gear. Her center cockpit and pilot house make her a secure and comfortable boat for offshore conditions. There are two of us committed for the expedition now; I am searching for a third crew member. Crew qualifications: as for any long expedition, an amicable personality willing to pitch in and be an important part of a team is critical, sharing both the subtle beauty of the sea and the chores required to keep the boat and the team going well. Technical sailing skill along with some experience with multiday offshore passages and watchkeeping are necessary . Financial terms: this is a volunteer opportunity; crew are expected to make their own travel arrangements to and from Bellingham, Washington and provide their own personal gear including foul weather gear and a sleeping bag; the captain will provide a PFD and pay all boat expenses.
