Voyage Synopsis R/V “ROBERT GRAY” — New York City to Charleston, South Carolina This offshore passage aboard R/V “ROBERT GRAY” is a working coastal expedition from New York Harbor to historic Charleston. Designed for serious sailors and expedition-minded crew, the voyage combines traditional seamanship, structured watchstanding, and purposeful miles along one of America’s most storied coastlines. Departing from the shadow of Manhattan and clearing the approaches of New York Harbor, we shape a southerly course along the Mid-Atlantic seaboard, standing proper offshore watches day and night. Weather routing, traffic separation schemes, celestial references when conditions permit, and disciplined bridge operations define the rhythm of the passage. This is not a cruise. It is a professional transit offering meaningful sea time, responsibility, and the experience of operating a historic research vessel under licensed command. Proposed Itinerary (Weather Dependent) Day 1 — Departure: New York Harbor Safety briefing and vessel orientation Cast off from Manhattan / Hudson River (Pier 25) Transit under Verrazzano Narrows Bridge Establish offshore watch rotation Clear Ambrose Channel and shape southbound course Days 2–3 — Offshore Mid-Atlantic Transit Continuous 3-watch rotation Navigation drills and traffic management Log keeping and position plotting Systems checks and engine room rounds Possible offshore routing outside: New Jersey coast Delaware approaches Chesapeake traffic separation Day 4 — Approaching the Carolinas Monitor Gulf Stream influence and weather windows Adjust routing for shoals and traffic Prepare vessel for coastal arrival Secure offshore watch schedule Final Day — Charleston Arrival Enter Charleston Harbor via marked channel Docking procedures and vessel securing (Charleston Maritime Center) Voyage debrief Logbook sign-off for sea days and nautical miles Estimated Duration 4–6 days depending on weather and routing decisions. Distance Approximately 600–700 nautical miles depending on offshore track.
