[ Full ] Mauritius to South Africa – Amel 53 Mauritius to South Africa ref 9646

Colin Streeter wants 1 crew for Island Pearl II, Amel Super Maramu 2000, 16m.

From Port Louis, Mauritius to Cape Town, South Africa.

July 2018 to November 2018.

In 2018 I left Brisbane, Australia, to embark on a multi-year cruising circumnavigation which I had spent many years planning and preparing for. The boat is a beautiful Amel 53ft yacht which is well equipped and has been meticulously maintained. In Thailand, I took on four additional crew members: three are staying until we reach the Caribbean in February 2019 and the fourth joined specifically for the ocean passage from Thailand to the Maldives. We are currently in Rodrigues with our next stop Mauritus. We invite an additional person join us, sailing the up-coming legs from Mauritius (departing approx 1 Jul 2018) or Reunion (approx 14 Jul 2018) up around the top of Madagascar (to NoseyBe) (anchored there for about three weeks in August 2018) and then down the Mozambique channel to South Africa, either to Richards Bay (arriving early Sept 2018), or all the way on to Cape Town, (arriving between mid Sept and Nov 2018). We are also open to consider the crew member joining us earlier to explore Rodrigues and / or Mauritius with us, where our time will mainly be at anchor and we will be exploring independently on shore during the days. Our schedule provides the opportunity to experience the places we visit along the way, and to sail through the southern Indian Ocean and (if you wish) to accomplish sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, accompanied by experienced sailors in a well equipped and extremely seaworthy comfortable sailing yacht. The boat, a 53' Amel Super Maramu 2000, is exceptionally well built and has been meticulously maintained, and is reliable and sturdy. I have spent the last few years equipping her for this trip with recent new additions including 850W solar panels, 2 wind generators, an unsinkable aluminium dinghy, HF radio, new Raymarine chart plotters and high capacity water maker among other things. A suitable life raft is of course a given; in addition I carry multiple spares on board for all key maintenance / repair items and although we hope for calm sailing conditions, the boat is prepared for all conditions. I've been intimately involved in the maintenance of the boat and together with the First Mate, an engineer who owns his own boat, we have the skillset needed to deal with all eventualities in what is potentially a challenging voyage. Communications equipment includes iridium go satellite communication and we will be using PredictWind software to assist with route planning. The boat is comfortably equipped for a pleasant voyage with luxuries including air conditioning (mainly used when in port), washing machine, microwave, two freezers and a fridge and a spacious saloon. You will have a comfortable bunk with storage lockers off from the saloon, and your head / bathroom will be shared with two other people. Importantly, we have adequate space for plentiful storage of food and we have some good cooks aboard! (plus some not so good ones :-) ). We enjoy a drink in port and on passages we operate a strictly no alcohol policy. The existing crew members are young-at heart 50+'s and we enjoy a laugh together and also take time to pursue interests while aboard include reading, photography and making videos as well as doing things together as a group and enjoying sundowner drinks together when not on a passage. This is a luxury 53ft boat, and in my opinion is also one of the safest and more comfortable world cruising yachts out there.

What roles/experience are needed (Crew 1): does not matter

Sailing with a Rally: Independent

I'm looking for (gender): either

Cabins/Sleeping : shared cabin-own bunk

Smoking on board: non-smokers only

Total people on board: 5

Crew roles: Above all I am looking for cultural fit with the existing crew, to ensure harmony on board and so that everyone enjoys the trip. To enjoy this passage, you will be fit and active, and not overly prone to seasickness as we may encounter rough seas. We will avoid bad sailing conditions where possible, so you will need some flexibility in your availability / schedule to allow for us to stay in port for an additional week or so if required, waiting for the best weather window. You will be in good health as we will be travelling in remote places where medical assistance may not be readily available. Your contribution of US$35/day will cover your on-board living expenses and shared boat costs like insurance, fuel, marina fees, repairs and maintenance. You will also need money for any personal items, on-shore costs such as eating out, travel to and from embarkation / disembarkation ports and any visas required. It will be an advantage for you to have some sailing experience and knowledge and equally, I am happy to share what I have learned over the years. Together with the existing crew we have a broad skillset capable of handling most eventualities and of course, to the extent that you have other relevant experience such as boat maintenance, route planning, first aid, assisting with social media (I am developing a website www.svislandpearl.com and making videos of the trip for my YouTube channel see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1c4jDTJiPw), cooking, fishing etc, you will have the opportunity to practice these and share your knowledge with us. You will have a passport with at least 6 months validity beyond 30 Sept 2018, with eligibility for visas / entry into the countries you will be visiting. Bringing a good sense of humour and a positive attitude, you will fit in well on board and have a great trip with us. Thanks for your interest; best wishes in finding the opportunity you are looking for and if you think this is the one, I look forward to hearing from you! Colin

Money: daily contribution from crew $35
