[ Archived ] Faroes Iceland Greenland United Kingdom to United Kingdom ref 11158

Mike Mayhew wants 2 crew for Seclusion, Moody 38 CC, 12m.

From Oban, United Kingdom to Invernerss, United Kingdom.

July 2019 to September 2019.

This is the third time I have advertised for crew for this trip. Many people have replied in the past and a number would be suitable with enough experience. But when it comes to firm dates they are unable to make a commitment. Once you have read this and have sufficient experience and are interested AND have carefully taken in the dates PLEASE ONLY REPLY IF YOU ARE ABLE TO MAKE A FIRM COMMITMENT NOW to the dates you are suggesting. If you can do that then we can email and talk about your potential for the trip. I need to be clear about date commitment now as my time for organising this trip - if it is to happen at all this year - is very limited and I must agree and confirm the crewing arrangements in the next week to ten days from today 29/04/19. ALL DATES ARE WEATHER DEPENDENT. Here is my best estimate of the relevant dates. I have sufficient crew from the start on 31st July/1st August from Oban in NW Scotland to the Faroes but one more can be accommodated if they are carrying on to Iceland, Greenland and back to Iceland. Arrive Faroes (Torshavn) approximately 7th/8th August. Depart Faroes 9th/10th August for NW Iceland (Raufarhofn) arriving 13th/14th August. Stay one full day then set off for Greenland 15th/16th August to arrive Scoresbysund - Greenland approximately 18th/19th August. Stay a few days in Greenland then sail back to Iceland to arrive in Rekjavik around the 26th/28th August. The yacht will then stop for 5 or 6 days and set off for NE Scotland (probably Inverness) to arrive there 6th/8th September. The dates are weather dependent of course. Here are some useful travel notes. Oban in Scotland is easy to get to by plane, car and train. Torshavn is best reached by plane and most flights route through Copenhagen. NE Iceland can be reached by plane to Rekjavik then a long bus ride to Raufarhofn. Or you can plane from Rekjavik most of the way then bus for the last 30%. Either way it will take a full day from Rekjavik Airport (which is not the international airport of Keflavik) Greenland - most settlements have gravel runways for light aircraft to fly to Rekjavik but as we don't know exactly where in Greenland we will land I would say joining or leaving the trip there is not a practical idea. Rekjavik has flights in and out of many countries and London is well served. Inverness is well served by train, car and plane. These dates are completely tied to the best chance we would have of getting into Scoresbysund or any other Greenland destination taking into account the sea ice. The best chance we would have to get into Greenland is the second or third week of August. So the start and end dates are built around that. It is not guaranteed we will make it past the coastal sea ice (if any) into a Greenland harbour - each year the sea ice behaves differently. I always sail a 'dry' yacht - one possible crew member wanted his freedom to have an alcoholic drink with his evening meal. All I can say is that if you can't keep off alcohol for just a few days at a time to help ensure your judgment is at peak performance for the safety of boat and crew then please don't reply. Once safely tied up a drink is fine in moderation but on Seclusion only once we are safely tied up. Crew pay for their travel to and from the yacht and I only ask for a small daily contribution towards their on-board food, fuel and maintenance costs. Not to exceed £15 a day on board. All duties are done on a rota basis including the cooking. It is most likely we will do 4 hour watches when underway unless the weather demands differently. A sea ice and bear anchor watch in Greenland waters only is possible.
