[ Archived ] Cruising the other half of the world United Kingdom to Australia ref 3934

Peter Knight wants 2 crew for Hinewai, Roberts Mauritus Ketch, 13.4m.

From Falmouth, United Kingdom to Melbourne, Australia.

May 2015 to May 2020.

Updated 2nd June 2015 Writing this in Porto having now left Falmouth and on the way to the Med. To be honest, I now have people joining me for the Med and probably for the Atlantic crossing. But who knows, things change. If you are interested in chatting, be more than happy to. It'll be a few years yet before I get back to Oz. Here's what I wrote a couple of months back ..... Left Melbourne back in 2007 and arrived in the UK just in time for my elderly folks to go crook and need a fair bit of help. The last 3 years have been tough. But now they all sorted and Hinewai is down in Falmouth where I'm getting her ready to head on with sailing that other half of the world. Departing sometime in May. From Falmouth, do a shake down run across to the Channel Islands, then possibly round to Cameret or straight across Biscay, probably down to the rias in northern Spain. Then work our way down Portugal with a view to reaching Gib 2nd half June. Then have about 3 months to play in the western Med. I'm thinking of heading to the Balearics, Sardinia/Corsica, Italy (must see Rome before I die), Sicily, Malta, but odds on we'll meet another cruiser who tells us "Oh, you must go to.....". Plan to haul Hinewai out in October, botty scrub, antifoul, rig etc, get her ready for the Atlantic. Not sure where yet. Back to Gib start of November, down to the Canaries, Atlantic November or December. Will probably break the habit of a lifetime and actually join a rally. Once in the Caribbean, I have no idea.... As for crew? I’ve never looked for “crew” like this before so not quite sure. You love sailing, you understand a boat, you can keep watch, you can wield a paintbrush.... But it’s more than that. I don't like using the word "crew" - more looking for people who, yes, know how to sail, but are also interesting, fun and who also who enjoy going exploring when we arrive somewhere. Friends? Mates? Buddies? Someone over a beer in the Chain Locker suggested "companion" - hmm, maybe, but that makes me sound like an 80 year old spinster. And for how long? While in the Med, thinking about one or two people and as long as I have cover, happy with shorter term. For the Atlantic, want a minimum of three of us on board, time before for you to get used to Hinewai and time after, I hope, to play. As I say, new to this so probably as well to chat if you’re interested.
