torsten griem wants 3 crew for pytheas, Shannon HPS 38, 12m.

From portsmouth, VA, United States to tortola, Virgin Islands - British.

November 2017 to November 2017.

I am interested in trading your offshore sailing skills & experience for fun & safe ride on my "new" boat/folly,a nice 2013 shoal draft motorsailor 3 helm Shannon HPS 38 I am picking up spring 2017 from Shannon Boat Company in Bristol, RI. http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2013/Shannon-38-HPS-2966671/Portsmouth/RI/United-States#.WJjD4PKd6Vs After refit this spring at SBC Pytheas, among other improvements, will have a new pilothouse layout conducive for larger crew and new pullman cabin forward port. I ask crew to pay all crew-specific expenses including air/travel fares, food, drink and ARC crew fee ($150). I, as boat owner, plan on paying all boat-specific expenses including slip, fuel, insurance, ARC boat entry fee, and maintenance. It would be fabulous if you would consider joining us for a leg or few or all on/of this adventure..... Currently "us" includes me the entire 2017/2018 voyage. My two sons, 15 and 18yo, will join us summers when their school is out. I am encouraging them to invite a friend or two to entertain them. My wife will join us for brief periods over the year. Unfortunately she has a pretty tight work schedule and no interest in portions involving long passages:-(. Pytheas max capacity: Four in two private cabins forward. Two in upper/lower bunks forward starboard (not private). Two overflow could sleep in pilothouse on drop down settee/table. I am thinking generally ideal crew number would be four, maybe up to six, to keep comfortable watch schedule and not get too crowded on not so big offshore boat. If you are an experienced couple with references you get the beautiful new pullman cabin Shannon is installing! Approx itinerary for ~18 months over 2017/2018 delivering Pytheas from Shannon Boat Company in Bristol, RI to San Juan Sailing in Bellingham, WA. 2017.... July/August-Pickup boat after refit at Shannon Boat Company in Bristol, RI. Sail up to Newfoundland having fun debugging/stress testing boat. After stop at Shannon, if necessary, will sail down to Portsmouth, VA by late summer. Nov-ARC Carib1500 Dec/Jan: Slowly sail/explore Caribbeans, thru Panama Canal.... 2018.... Febr-Sail/explore Sea of Cortes Mar-Sail to Hawaii. April- Sail/explore Hawaiian Islands May-Sail to Alaska June/July-Sail/explore Alaska August-Sail down to Bellingham, WA to deliver to San Juan Sailing (bareboat charter company).

Crew roles: First bit about me...I (Pytheas new owner) have owned boats for ~25 years sailing Pacific Northwest's Salish Sea between Seattle, Barkley Sound, Princess Louisa Inlet, and Desolation Sound (coastal)learning from sailing friends as I went. Glad to say that I have zero crew injury or hull losses to report which I mostly credit to conservative due diligence studying weather and new destinations before departure. Unfortunately wind is pretty fickle around here so truth be told that mostly involved stinkpotting with my old slow stout traditional motorsailor ketch, a Fisher Northeaster 30, vs getting solid experience sailing wide range of conditions including foul weather. My one offshore experience is crewing friend's Gunboat66 over ARC Atlantic course 2016 so I now appreciate and respect the challenges associated with long offshore passagemaking. My experiences tell me that successful voyages require every crew member to be openminded accepting with a smile the one or two idiosyncrasies we all have. I am also thinking Pytheas isn't big enough for specialized roles I see on Oceancrewlink. Ideally each crew member can take turns taking on most all roles associated with operating a fun, fast and safe boat including being cook, sail tending, helmsman, watch, inspector, cleaning duties, captain of the day, etc. I think as long as we don't burn the food beyond recognition and keep off the rocks or bottom I think crew will do fine:-). I am reasonably comfortable maintaining mechanical, electrical and computer systems having worked aerospace engineering for ~30 years but appreciate help with whatever needs to be done on and around the boat. My objective is to depart with at least one person with significant experience and competence managing foul weather in the unlikely event we encounter a storm despite our best intentions to avoid them. I have little experience with that and navigating by old fashion paper chart, sextant and dead reckoning navigation, all skills that I would like to acquire before and during the journey. Most systems on Pytheas have redundancy including gps, chartplotter, radar, (electronic and windvane) autohelm and rudders. She is equipped with vhf, satcom, ais transponder, EPIRB, sirius weather and six man liferaft. She is very well equipped but if you see something missing please tell me and I may well buy it before heading out. Finally, Walter Schultz, the designer/founder of Shannon Boat Company reassured me that this relatively modern design light shoal draft motorsailor can really sail and that he would have no qualms taking her out anywhere except off Cape Horn and the Arctic which I suspect he would say for anything with substantial pilothouse. Opportunities for checking each other and Pytheas out before ARC Carib 1500: Pacific Northwest/Salish Sea-Schedule a weekend to join me sailing my stout little 1976 Fisher Northeaster 30 motorsailor ketch Bulldawg out of Roche Harbor, WA. Very different boat but if we can work together on her slow 30' we should do fine on Pytheas' fast 38. https://goo.gl/photos/2pcFfhEFzwg4Vf428 Sailing Pytheas out of Bristol, RI for debug/stress sailing/fun to finetune: July/August: Sailing slowly between Shannon Boat Company in Bristol, RI and Bay of Funday. Ultimately arriving in Portsmouth,VA late October in time for ARC Carib1500. Thanks much for your consideration! Torsten
