[ closed ] 1st Mate of SY Shaima New Zealand to Taiwan, Province of China ref 13861
Alberto DUHAU wants 1 crew for shaima, Hylas 63, m.
From Bay of Islands, New Zealand to Kaoshiung, Taiwan, Province of China.
March 2023 to January 2024.
I am looking for an experienced 1st mate to sail with me as owner/captain during year 2023, and possibly extending this opportunity further (although long term commitment is not a factor in the interview process). The candidate will be able to talk to previous 1st mates and verify what his experiences on Shaima where. The person that comes with me as first mate, will enjoy the comfort and unique experiences that everybody is enjoying in Shaima and he will be treated as if he was part of the family. Additionally it is my personal goal to transmit my lifelong sailing and engineering expertise so he increases his sailing and boat maintenance skills to the maximum with the goal that he might one day become skipper of a large oceanic sailing yacht like Shaima. He will also have good payment and benefits, with almost all expenses paid assuring a good savings rate. Starting out from Opua New Zealand, in April 2023 we are going to cruise extensively through Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, PNG, NE Indonesia, and Philippines ending in Taiwan. I am studying the region in detail to develop an itinerary that includes the most remote islands, with the most unpolluted marine and land environments as well as traditional villages, in order to trek, dive, free dive, and interact with local tribes. in 2024 Shaima aims to sail Japan, Aleuthians, and Alaska ending in Hawaii or Tahiti. Shaima is a Hylas 63 bought new by me in 2017, and customized with the dual purpose of sailing the trade winds and high latitudes, and has sailed already 43,000 NM in about 5 years. Previous voyages have been: half of 2017, Fort Lauderdale to Caribbean 2018 Caribbean to Maine and back to Fort Lauderdale; 2019; Fort Lauderdale to Caribbean, to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Faroe, Scotland, Ireland and Spain; 2020: Mediterranean from Valencia, to Greece and back, then to Canaries and Atlantic Crossing to Antigua; 2021 from the Caribbean to Maine and back to Bahamas; 2022 Shaima Pac-Xing 2022, from Fort Lauderdale to New Zealand. if you are interested please watch videos in youtube shaima hylas 63 to know more about Shaima's philosophy and accomplishments. Shaima sails with me as a captain and a first mate and with some sailor friends in long passages. While cruising friends and family join us. Everybody in Shaima is part of the "Shaima Crew" and we all have important roles, from crewing, to cooking, washing, barman, DJ, etc The 1st mate will participate in most of the land and sea daily explorations, such as dives and treks and will be treated as family. His responsibilities will include: Sailing while cruising and in passages. Some long passages will be alone with the captain, although in general we aim for 4. While cruising everybody pitches in with sailing work. Preparing the boat to go out sailing while cruising and long passages, also preparing the gear for explorations (tender, kayaks, snorkeling gear, beach gear, etc) Cleaning both outside and inside, although with a full cadre of guests everybody pitches in in cleaning. Mechanical work, many times with the help of the skipper. Some times mechanical work while sailing is required. Supervising contractors in their mechanical and cleaning work. Cooking is in general a responsibility of the captain or the guests. My responsibilities and style as a captain are: I do every kind of job with equal enthusiasm. I treat employees with respect and kindness. I am calm and patient while leading/teaching. I am tolerant of human weaknesses and support my subordinates to overcome them. I am generous with my time, money and knowledge. I keep my calm under pressure. I am not fearful. I have a profound knowledge of sailing, mechanics, navigation, and some knowledge of weather science and cleaning. I am happy as long as the guests are having a good time even when I can't enjoy the activity that was planned for the day. I love to dive, free dive, spear fish, trek and explore. I pursue excellence but I don't nitpick and I am not an obsessive perfectionist. I am 68, athletic and in good health.
