Description

Designed for the famous French sailor, Bernard Moitessier, the original Joshua was the ninth yacht to round Cape Horn, and would probably have won the first single-handed non-stop race around the world, in 1968, if Moitessier hadn’t dropped out in the home stretch, turned around, and sailed another half-circumnavigation to Tahiti. After the race, Meta - the company that built Joshua - built 70 more. Petronella is #29 in the series and has crossed the Atlantic 11 times, so far. She’s in excellent shape with new rigging and sails in 2018.

There are been several books written about Joshua and her sister ships:

  • “Cape Horn: The Logical Route” Bernard Moitessier
  • “The Long Way” Bernard Moitessier
  • “Time on Ice: A Winter Voyage to Antarctica” Shapiro and Bjelke
  • “Northern Light: One Couple’s Epic Voyage from the Arctic to the Antarctic” Shapiro and Bjelke
  • “Notable Boats: Small Craft, Many Adventures” Compton & Scott

There are also several videos based on the footage Moitessier took during the first Golden Globe Race back in 1968. For example https://youtu.be/Ptmn0L-LSqE

Joshua was built as a very simple expedition boat, but after the big race, Meta built 70 sister-ships that were more yacht-like, but still Joshuas at heart. There are many pictures on my blog: https://www.unlikelyboatbuilder.com
