DescriptionEtoile du Sud is a sister ship of Badger, the vessel Pete and Annie Hill sailed engineless all over the Atlantic (see Annie Hill's books Voyaging on a Small Income and From Labrador to Brazil). Other Benford 34 owners have cruised worldwide. The boat is newly painted and has new sails, and a low hours engine. Instruments include chartplotter, radar, depth, speed, and wind direction/strength. Steering is by tiller, with an autopilot doing most of the work. Communications gear includes 2 VHF radios (1 with and AIS receiver) and an InReach satellite text communicator. The cabin features a double v-berth with a door for privacy, a starboard side double quarterberth, and a salon area that can provide a berth for one person. There is an enclosed head but no shower - solar showers in the cockpit instead. The galley and head have water supplied by foot pumps. This boat was built in Quebec, Canada,to designer Jay Benford's specifications (3 sheets of plywood joined with epoxy and covered with fiberglass on the exterior). The masts are tapered aluminum. The builder sailed the boat down the East coast to the Florida Keys and then to Havana, Cuba. A subsequent owner had the vessel trucked to Ventura, CA; I bought the vessel in January 2022. |
