Description

The Avontuur is a two masted gaff rigged schooner which was built in 1920 by Otto Smit in Stadskanaal, Netherlands. Until 2005 she was used as a sailing cargo vessel, most recently by Dutch Captain Paul Wahlen. He sailed cargo between the North Sea, Baltic, North Atlantic and across to Caribbean ports where she was widely regarded as one of the last true cargo sailing ships of the twentieth century. After years serving as a day passenger ship along the Dutch coast and West Friesian islands the Avontuur became the foundation of the Timbercoast community in autumn 2014.

This what we are about -> Environmental protection: We believe that those who come after deserve the same resources we currently use and enjoy. Through direct experience, we know that current marine transportation practices are unsustainable and detrimental to humanity and the environment. We do things differently - not by creating something new, but rather by resuscitating time-honoured knowledge and practices. Education: We foster a culture of training, seafaring experience, and the revitalisation of skills long forgotten. We provide opportunities for those wishing to build a career in the sustainable marine industry. Ethics: We are not your average shipping company. We believe in creating an inclusive, meaningful work environment and in moving away from exploitative business strategies. We support local economies by providing clean transport for value added products within sustainable and ethical supply chains.
