Whilst I am British, I moved to Switzerland at the age of 4 where I went to a Swiss local school and learned in German. At the age of 12 I moved to a British boarding school where I discovered my love for water sports. I coxed the school 8+ for a few years until I started to grow and this was when I picked up sailing. After a few years of bashing around in dinghy’s, I completed Competent Crew with my family, where I met a boat owner through our instructor. The boat was a beautiful X-43 and so I was very fortunate to be invited to sail down the Iberian coast on her as my first adventure, where we navigated many marinas and I got to meet and enjoy getting on with other like minded people as the crew changed over the voyage. Having got on very well with the skipper, the year after that, she asked me to help deliver the same boat from the Azores to Portugal, where I had my first experience as a watch leader. This trip gave me a taste of offshore sailing, which I loved and taught me how to deal with issues independently on a yacht, especially when we had an interaction with orcas when they disabled our rudder and started pushing us towards the rocks off Sagres. In hindsight, once the Orcas were driven off and we were thankfully still afloat, I really enjoyed working with the skipper and rest of the crew in working out how we could bring the boat home safely to Lagos with a broken rudder. Where I spent several weeks helping out other owners in Lagos with boat maintenance, as I have a strong passion for the technical aspects of sailing and maintenance. I love being around the marina getting to know people and also helped a charter company take an older Oceanis 45 out with the skipper with guests on board. I've just graduated from university and currently looking for opportunities to build my miles and further experience as I aim towards the yacht-master qualification. | |
