DescriptionChallenger was built for the 1997 Whitbread Round the World Yacht race. She is of Kevlar sandwich construction with a 15' keel supporting 16,000lb of lead. The boats of this class are equipped with 3 watertight compartments and a 126 degree AVS and are therefore considered to be some of the most stable and toughest offshore racing boats in the world. We never push Challenger to her true limits and therefore benefit from an incredible reserve capability that directly translates to safety for her charter crews. Challenger is capable of 20-25knts and crossed the Atlantic last year in 8 days and 20 hours (NFLD to UK). Below decks like all racing boats Challenger is very basic- our focus being on providing a comparable experience to that of offshore racing professionals. |
Additional detailsChallenger is a Kevlar built sloop with a 90' Aluminium four spreader rig, 8' spade rudder and 15' T keel. She has a maximum sail area of approx. 4500 sq ft and is capable of 450Nm in a day in full race trim. She has been modified form her original configuration in that she has a roller furling jib and bowsprit (no spinnaker poles). |
