[ Archived ] Baltic sea – island hopping to Helsinki. Sweden to Finland ref 6615
From Visby , Sweden to Helsinki, Finland.
June 2016 to June 2016.
We are sailing our 12 meter hi spec Ovni on a 4 month voyage of the Baltic Sea and have 1 spaces for crew to join us for between 6 or 12 days starting sat 18 June. Visby is easily reached by short flight from Stockholm and there will be time to explore one of the best preserved mediaeval towns in Scandinavia before we set sail for the remote shallow anchorages and fine swimming beaches on the north side of Gotland. Then through the Farosund on Gotland for a long day sail to Latvia. Possibly Ventspils for an authentic East European bustling harbour and town, into the Bay of Riga to the small traditional forested island of Ruhnu then via Virtsu to Muhu island (Orresarre). We then sail east to the Estonian coast. A great country and an excellent time to visit as the contrast between the old centralized economy and new western style democracy are still visible. We will explore the off-lying islands and small fishing harbours which have seen little change in recent years and will give us a taste of 'old Russia'. At Haapsalu we see how the Russian aristocracy from St Petersburg enjoyed their summer vacations and we think this will be one of the highlights of our summer. Tallinn the capital is more of an East European tourist destination where we can explore the old towns and Russian Orthodox architecture. Finally we sail across the eastern Baltic sea to Helsinki -the capital of Finland. An action packed trip, with plenty of sea miles, mixed with island relaxation and exploration in Latvia and Estonia- off the beaten track. on from Tallinn to Helsinki and depart from the Finish capital. Helsinki is also the spring board for a short train to St Petersburg if you have energy left for more exploration.
