[ active ] Recreational Crew Fiji to United States ref 15849

wants 1 crew for S/V Selkie, Westerly Ocean-master 48, m.

From Nadi, Fiji to Juneau, United States.

April 2026 to August 2026.

Currently my plan is to get the boat to Alaska via a May-July Pacific crossing west to east. First direct from the Oceana region to Hawaii and second from Hawaii anywhere in the Pacific Northwest and northward within safety of the coast through the higher latitudes needed to cross to get to Juneau. There is a possibility for a longer voyage westward through the Indian and Atlantic, through Panama or Cabo de Hornos; then northward to Alaska- that could take more than a year; at the moment though that's not the plan (but it is definitely a possibility; in which case crew timeframes would be flexible). As for Timeframes of the west to east pacific crossing; there is the option to be onboard for either one major crossing or both if you have time. Preferably both, if not at least the first. Both crossings are 2,500NM+ opposite the trades. So if experience or ocean-miles are what you're looking for- there's both to be had if you have the heart for it. Longer-term plans mean living aboard in Juneau while going to school/working there. Should a westward option be deemed safer by myself in the next month; long term plans could include a greater "round the world" kind of year from Fiji to Alaska the right way. Something else to talk about if you're more interested in that than the wrong-way Pacific crossings and if whoever sees this has the heart and the time. Current crew include: me, myself and I. I'm looking for help. traditionally though I lived aboard with my parents and three younger siblings and we were comfortably living onboard as a family of six for seven years. As a family, and personally I've had crew before and I am not looking for someone who's soul intent is a free-ride. This will be two hard crossings followed by what could be weeks in high-latitude shoulder-season sailing. The boat can be put through anything; what I'm not confident in is my ability however, to not sleep for weeks on end. Which Is why I'm looking for crew; someone; or some people to both enjoy a love of the ocean, and be ready for some serious challenge.

What roles/experience are needed (Crew 1): does not matter

Sailing with a Rally: Independent

I'm looking for (gender): female

Cabins/Sleeping : shared cabin-own bunk

Smoking on board: non-smokers only

Total people on board: 1

Crew roles: Respect and Kindness I think is all I could ask for. Cultural and personal sensitivity; I grew up sailing around the world; so I don't generally get along with hateful people... I don't think I know anyone who does though. I grew up with two sisters onboard so there's no "clean and tidy" requirements (although I do a lot of cleaning/organizing myself 'especially at sea'). I'm a cross country kid and I grew up free/recreational diving; so if you can be a good running/diving buddy that would be a game-changer for an interview. Preferably a strong swimmer, so you don't always have to wear a lifejacket; I'm good at CPR as an EMT; that doesn't mean I want to ever have to use that skill. Good communication is good; especially after a 20+ day crossing when everyone can be really tired. Eager to learn and work is always great for anything, open minded and ready to problem solve (fix things you know nothing about) is the definition of living on a sailboat. I clicked "ready to party" I don't usually, but I figured that it comes along with open-mindedness. Obviously as stated, just kind and respectful; it takes good communication, patients and a certain commited trust to sail across an ocean and into higher latitudes with someone you hardly know. I'm open to having a pet on-board, it would however take some convincing. I don't mind piercings or tattoos; however you express yourself is your own right and I am completely respectful and supportive of that; I myself have a couple tattoos and plan on grabbing some more along the way. Financially; as stated before, this is not for someone looking for a free ride. This is an expedition of sorts, a real challenge where you can learn to sail, dive, kite surf; immerse yourself in foreign cultures and learn new languages. There are two crossings that could take two to three weeks both; so be aware that this is offshore sailing; where good sleep is a luxury and not a right, I will carry most if not all the burden; I've been sailing since I was an infant, I've been onboard for more than 50k+ NM, I'm a distance runner and am I'm shooting for Sail/Ski mountaineering as a career path; so sleep deprivation and pain are no strangers to myself. I'm only hoping for, as I said a kind and respectful crew that can and will help. Financially I am not expecting to be compensated for fuel, repairs or living space. I am hoping however that whoever is onboard can facilitate supporting for provisions (food) evenly, as feeding more than one person gets expensive; all the rest is my responsibility and your living space (whichever berth you choose) is your space and will not be interfered with by myself or anyone else onboard, your space is your space. Of which is paid for by your help as crew.

Money: expenses shared equally

Travel to and from boat: negotiable
