After delivering other people’s yachts for the last 30-odd years, I plan to take my own Westerly 33 ketch ARUNA down to Northern Spain in 2025 to follow the old Camino del Norte pilgrimage route as closely as possible, but by sea! Apparently, the Cathedral at Santiago has now given its blessing to several maritime routes that link to the walking routes to the Cathedral, where a Compostella is signed, sealed, and delivered*. The general principle is that if you do at least 100 nautical miles along the route in a sailing boat, you are awarded the certificate! As an ex-delivery skipper, I have missed many beautiful harbours between the UK and Bayona, which I hope will be our final destination, and I would like to put this right with your help. So, starting around 1st June 2025 from Manningtree, Essex, the plan is to make a slow passage down the Atlantic coast of France to the Bayonne/Biarritz area, arriving by the end of June(ish), visiting as many of the French Atlantic Islands as possible and the Golfe du Morbihan. Then, coast hop along the Camino del Norte (from the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia as far as Bayona) during July and August before returning to the UK in September. Considering current EU regulations, I appreciate that nobody can make the whole trip, but a week or so may be possible. The trip will be on a shared expenses basis, including any food or drink aboard, fuel, marina or harbour fees. You have to pay your travel expenses to and from the yacht and most importantly, insurance. This will be a wonderful opportunity to practise pilotage skills and fish cuisine, and I do hope you’ll be able to join me. *South Biscay Pilot RCC
