[ active ] Sea of Cortez to Seattle via Hawaii Mexico to United States ref 15323
From San Carlos, Mexico to Seattle, United States.
April 2025 to July 2025.
If an offer comes through for insurance in early April, one crew member and I will leave from San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico for Seattle, WA, US during the last week of April 2025. If the insurance company turns me down, the prior crew member and I will go for a 5 week cruise in the Sea of Cortez and harbors south as far as Zihuatanejo. The insurance issue is that insurance companies do not like home built boats, especially not if they are built of wood. My beloved boat is a Benford 45, aka a "Badger"*, built of plywood sheets bonded together with epoxy and covered with fiberglass per specifications of the designer. In other words, Etoile du Sud is a bomb-proof monoque hull which incorporates plywood as one of three integrated components. Insurance companies do not have a category for this type of construction, but sister ships have navigated the planet, and my boat has had a recent survey with no significant structural issues detected. So, if the one possible willing insurance company makes me an offer I can afford, we are off to Seattle, the city where I spend summers and early fall and tend to call home. If they do not make me an offer I can afford, we will stay in Mexico, because I live 6 months per year in Puerto Vallarta and like the country a lot. You could join us in San Carlos if you have some ocean sailing experience and an interest in sailing to Seattle via Hawaii in late spring and early summer of this year. Please contact me soon if you are interested and we can talk about this opportunity. By the way, if you are interested in "Badgers", look up "Voyaging on a Small income" by Annie Hill, and if you want to know more about my boat, search for "Sailing a Benford 45 Etoile du Sud".
