Description

Chao Lay is a Bavaria 50 Cruiser built in Germany in 2006. It's a big comfortable boat, built for comfort not for speed. During the World ARC Circumnavigation we consistently arrived into port as one of the last 3 or 4 boats out of the fleet of 24. We can pretty much count on making 140 nautical miles per day on a passage. We made the Pacific crossing from Galapagos to Marquesas in 20 days. The Indian Ocean Crossing took a whopping 18 days. I'm completely happy with that. When I was 24, I liked to push the boat, “rail-in-the-water”, “put the bone in her teeth”. Well, now I'm 70 and I'm through with that style of sailing. What's the hurry? I reef early, keep the boat on her feet, and try to sail as comfortably as possible. I could care less how long it takes to get to the destination. The minute I step onto the boat, I'm already right where I want to be. So, if you're in a hurry or like to race, this is not the boat for you.
