My experience on the water started in the 50s. I have messed around in small boats; sailed competitively in junior sailing, penguins, comets, stars, log canoes, and cruising boats; sailed for 3.5 years on a 96' square rigged schooner, the Tabor Boy; lived aboard, sailed, restored, and raised a family on a Pearson Invicta 36' yawl for 4 years, and owned, maintained, chartered out and cruised a Krogen 42 for 20 years. So, I have a lot of experience but no credentials or certification. This is my boating resume, the good, bad, and ugly. It is a little long, but I don’t have any certificates or endorsements, just a lot of experience, in the neighborhood of 20,000 hours sailing and motoring. I have always lived adjacent to or on the water. I have sailed, motored and maintained boats and yachts forever. I worked as a builder, developer and landlord but boats have been my avocation. Growing up adjacent to St. Michaels, MD, USA the water was my playground. My friends and I went swimming whenever possible and when not played on the ice. Before age 10 we had small outboards. The first chore after school was bailing out the skiff and filling it up with gas. Then we were off to explore, crab, and generally create havoc. Water to me is a very comfortable and natural place to be. The next phase was junior sailing. I crewed at first in a small one design and moved on to skippering and ownership of a Penguin. This lasted for about five years and ended with top honors for the summer regatta season on the Chesapeake. After this I crewed on Comets, Lightenings, and Stars. I, also, helped deliver a sailboat from Connecticut to Oxford, MD. I did my first for hire job and varnished the interior of a Egg Harbor motor yacht. Then I was off to private school at Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass. At Tabor I crewed on the Tabor Boy, a 93' square rigged schooner. This was an incredible experience. Whether I was chipping paint, furling square sails 50' over the water, heaving sheets in a gail off Hatteras, or repainting bilges with red lead, it was all incredible. In addition I took courses in naval science, three years of navigation and general knowledge for which I won awards. Tabor was an incredible experience and a sound grounding in boating, sailing…. During this time period but mostly in college I crewed competitively in cruising boats, sailed in Corinthian events, built a kayak, sailed on log canoes, and delivered sailboats with a friend. After college I lived aboard a Pearson Invicta yawl and raised my daughter on her to age 3. Before we were living on this sailboat, I rebuilt the interior, replaced the motor, and did multiple improvements on the exterior. We sailed extensively on the Chesapeake from top to bottom over a period of 8 years. Then life was family, house and job until 1999. I bought a 42' Krogen trawler. After six months I had her in shape for bareboat charter. This lasted for five years. For fifteen years I have used her privately. My wife and I cruised from the Chesapeake South to Keys, the Bahamas and the west coast of Florida. North we cruised into Maine and a couple of times to the North Channel in Canada. I have maintained, reconfigured, and rebuilt much of the boat. This included replacing teak decks with fiberglass, rebuilding/replacing the main engine and generator and completely upgrading the battery/charging system. I helped deliver a catamaran from Martinique to Turks and Caicos (without electronic navigation or any charts in the end) about 5 years ago. The bad and ugly: I am 69 years old, however I am active and exercise. I still work in construction and will be moving a small house this spring. I got sea sick a lot when young but this has improved tremendously as I have aged. That's not to say that four foot swells on the beam in a trawler won't get to me, but I generally don't have a problem. I, also, take precautions using Dramamine at the start of a rough voyage. I wear glasses and travel with spares. Over 20,000 hours I have had problems on the water but have always been able to address them and get to a port. So there it is, the good, bad, and ugly. On balance: I know how to be a supportive crew, can maintain and fix many systems, can cook, drink moderately in port and don't smoke. Please call 410-745-2478, or text, so I can introduce myself.
